🌙 6. Respect Its Dormancy Period
After blooming (usually late fall or early winter), your cactus needs a rest period — a time to recharge for the next bloom.
Here’s what to do:
-
Lower the temperature to around 10–12°C (50–54°F).
-
Provide at least 12–14 hours of darkness each night for about 6–8 weeks.
This rest period mimics the short days of winter in its natural habitat and triggers a new cycle of flower buds.
💡 Tip: Keep your plant away from artificial light at night (TVs, lamps, etc.), which can disturb its blooming rhythm.
🌼 7. Feed It for Continuous Blooms
During the growing season, your Christmas cactus appreciates a little nutrition boost.
Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer (like 20-20-20) once every 2–3 weeks from March to September. When flower buds start forming, switch to a phosphorus-rich fertilizer (e.g., 10-30-10) to encourage blooming.
Stop fertilizing during the rest period — this allows the plant to focus on storing energy for the next flowering phase.
