Many older adults downplay feelings of loneliness, sadness, or anxiety, thinking it’s just “part of getting older.” It’s not — and untreated mental health issues can have life-shortening effects.

Why it’s deadly:
Chronic loneliness has been linked to inflammation, weakened immune response, heart disease, and early death — comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

Fix it:
Stay socially engaged. Join a senior group, volunteer, or stay connected with family and friends. If you’re feeling persistently down, don’t hesitate to talk to a therapist or counselor.

4. Mismanaging Medications 💊

Polypharmacy (taking multiple medications) is common among older adults — but so are mistakes with dosing, timing, or drug interactions.

Why it’s deadly:
Improper medication use can lead to falls, internal bleeding, organ damage, and other serious complications.

Fix it:
Regularly review medications with a doctor or pharmacist. Use pill organizers, alarms, or medication apps to keep track. Never mix prescriptions with alcohol unless explicitly cleared by a doctor.
